The Hub of Elmore County
Mountain Home and its surrounding areas offer a historic insight into Elmore County. Built as a livestock and agricultural loading station by the Oregon Short Line Railroad, and later home to Mountain Home AFB, the community offers a unique diversity to anyone who visits.
Hotels, shopping, farmers markets, the Mountain Home Historical Museum, Elmore County Courthouse, and other historical buildings can be found here along with multiple parks, swimming pools, a municipal golf course, and an airport. The Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce, and Mountain Home Parks and Recreation keep residents and visitors entertained with events and activities throughout the year.
Air Force Appreciation Day is a unique event held annually in downtown Mountain Home to celebrate our local Mountain Home AFB and military community offering entertainment and activities, food, and Idaho’s longest parade. Mountain Home is also home to the annual Crazy Dayz event with a carnival and lots of activities throughout the community celebrating the beginning of summer. The local Mountain Home Arts Council entertains residents and visitors through summer concert events and multiple gatherings showcasing artists from all areas of Idaho. Mountain Home has a Basque background, so the Basque Community in Mountain Home offers insight into the Basque Culture through a museum and also an annual festival filled with wonderful food and cultural events. The Mountain Home Community Canvas is also a popular destination within this community. The city was named the “Mural Capital of Idaho” and currently has nearly 200 creative murals and art throughout the downtown area. The art is completed by locals, showcasing local talent, and is a reflection of the community and its culture. The city offers a wonderful quality of life for residents and visitors with so many things to see and do!
Outdoor recreation is just a short drive in any direction after gassing up and gathering supplies in Mountain Home. A short drive down Highway 51 will take you to Bruneau Dunes State Park in Owyhee County, which is home to the tallest single–structured sand dune in North America. While there folks can enjoy hiking, fishing, and other outdoor activities, including a visit to the night sky observatory.
Or maybe you would like to visit CJ Strike Reservoir, located just a short drive along the way to the community of Grandview in Owyhee County. CJ Strike is a favorite for the locals as a hot fishing and water activity spot for the whole family to enjoy.
The Highway 20 exit in Mountain Home will take you to the Trinity Mountain area of Elmore and is one of the main routes to access the Boise and Sawtooth National Forests from I–84. This winding highway leads to breathtaking scenery, historical markers, and secondary roads to the Trinity Mountain Region of Elmore County and on into Camas County, Idaho
